Rivergate Vessel of the Month – JUNE 2015. SY “Sarissa”
This month’s vessel of the month is SY Sarissa; a 42-metre sloop built by Vitters shipyard in 2011. Where does the name come from? A “sarissa” was a long spear or pike about 4-7 metres in length, used in ancient Greek and Hellenistic warfare. It was introduced by Philip II of Macedon and was used in his Macedonian phalanxes. Our project management team were only too happy to assist with this impressive sailing yacht. Sarissa underwent a haul out and refit whilst visiting Rivergate, which included major mechanical and engineering works to her engine rooms, fridge / freezers, electronics and air-conditioning, as well as an array of other works.
As much as we were impressed by Sarissa, it seems there were impressed with Rivergate, remarking that Rivergate is “the only option in Australia which specialises in the unique kind of service needed for a large sailing yacht like Sarissa, and the works were first rate. Good enough to rival any large yacht refit centre anywhere in the world”.
The vessel is currently under circumnavigation, sailing south from Asia for their now third visit to Australia. Where to next? Sarissa has just left Rivergate and is sailing north to explore Northern Queensland, from there the crew will circumnavigate back to Europe. We asked Sarissa’s captain where their favourite cruising destination has been so far and why; “The South Pacific” he tells us – “remote, wild, full of life and incredibly beautiful”, it’s not a hard sell! However, he loved Brisbane’s “great weather” whilst they were here.
This stunning vessel and easy-going crew were a pleasure to have and we look forward to seeing them again in the future.
